Teaching Debate: Giving Students a Voice

This year, debate is our common strategy.But teaching debate is not about waiting for a special debate lesson. It is about creating opportunities for students to think, speak, listen, question, disagree respectfully, and defend their ideas — every single day. If we want our students to become confident public speakers, we cannot teach speaking only occasionally. It has to become part of the culture of every lesson. And it doesn’t always have to look like a formal debate.

Sometimes, it starts with a picture.

Today, it is a picture of a butterfly trapped inside a head, behind a window with bars, with a lock and a key.

They brainstorm:

What might the butterfly represent?

What could the lock symbolize?

What might the key represent? Why is there a barred window?

What can prevent us from expressing our thoughts?

And what can help us let those thoughts out?

There was no single “correct” answer.

Students had to speculate, interpret, justify, listen to different opinions and respond.

And this is where the picture becomes a speaking lesson.

The butterfly can represent our creativity, thoughts and ideas.

The bars can represent fear, shyness or insecurity.

The lock can represent the things that keep our ideas inside.

And the key can represent our ability to express ourselves.

Because sometimes our students have wonderful ideas — they are simply locked inside their minds.

Our job is to give them the key.

And that key is not only vocabulary or grammar. It is confidence, practice, the ability to formulate an idea, support it with reasons, listen to others and speak up.That is why debate is our common strategy this year.

Not just debate as an event, but as a habit , as a way of thinking and speaking.

And little by little, the butterfly gets its wings.

We don’t teach students only to know the language.

We teach them to have a voice — and to use it.
