Peer Observation: Behind the Paper

As the Head of the Department, I know I can look a little intimidating when I walk into a classroom with my papers, pen, and observation sheet in hand.

I can almost imagine what a teacher might think:

“Oh no… What is she writing down?”

And honestly, I understand that feeling.

Being observed is not always comfortable. Even experienced teachers can feel different when someone is sitting at the back of the classroom, taking notes. You may suddenly become more conscious of every question you ask, every instruction you give, every minute that passes. But here is what I want my colleagues to know:

“ I don’t enter a classroom looking for faults. I enter looking for possibilities”

When I observe a lesson, I am not only observing the teacher. I am watching the students. Are they engaged? Are they thinking? Are they speaking? Are they making choices? Is the lesson giving them space to become active learners?

And sometimes, while observing a colleague, I learn something myself.

• A clever classroom technique.

• A different way of asking a question.

• A moment of genuine student interaction.

• An idea that I want to take back to my own teaching.

Of course, peer observation has its challenges. It can feel like evaluation. It can create pressure. And feedback can be uncomfortable if it is not handled with care.

That is why I believe the most important word in peer observation is trust.

The observation sheet is only a piece of paper.

The conversation that follows is what really matters.

But behind those papers is not a checklist of faults.

There is a genuine interest in our teaching, our students, and our growth as professionals.

Observe. Reflect. Share. Grow.

Because the strongest departments are not built by teachers who never make mistakes.

They are built by teachers who are willing to learn from one another.
