Lost in Translation

International Translation Day is celebrated every year on 30 September on the feast of St. Jerome. It is the annual event for our literary community, as it is a splendid opportunity for teachers and students to come together and decide on a theme for each year.

We mark this day by translating and analyzing Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. Different school disciplines join in celebration, performing a variety of activities around the novel and its title. The subject that we have chosen for discussion on Translation Day fully corresponds to the theme selected.

We start the lesson by speculating on the title «Թշվառները» (ֆր.՝ Les Misérables). The students discuss some important rules for translating names of the books in general.

Due to culture and other factors, titles need to be handled with sensitivity, to assure that the resulting translation is culturally appropriate and makes sense to the intended audience- while keeping the original message intact. The students, along with the teachers, highlight the question -Why Les Misérables is always referred by the French title.
We discover that in the English-speaking world, the novel is usually referred to by its original French title. However, several alternatives have been used, including The Miserables, The Wretched, The Miserable Ones, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, The Victims and The Dispossessed which means deprived of property, or other possessions.
Russian teachers also enter the discussion explaining different Russian interpretations of the title Les Misérables.
